The peels
range from mild (referred to as a light "lunch" peel)
to medium-deep to deep depending on the chemical solution used
and the patient's dermis. The patient can return to normal activity
immediately following light "lunch" peels. Dr. Galoob
will determine which one is right for the patient based on their
skin condition and desired appearance. Dr. Galoob uses chemicals
specifically designed for the peel process. He chooses products
for his patients that are safe, predictable and cost effective.
Before
the Procedure
Prior to the
procedure, a complete medical history is taken in order to evaluate
the general health of the patient. Dr. Galoob will instruct the
patient on how to prepare for their peel treatment. Sometimes
Retin A and other skin care products (such as the OBAGI skin care
system) may to used to pre-treat the skin. The patient may spend
a few weeks or more in pre-treatment before the actual peel.
The Procedure
The procedure
is usually performed in Dr. Galoob's office. The mild peel only
causes a slight stinging sensation; therefore, no anesthesia is
needed. A fan held by the patient easily alleviates any sensation
of discomfort during the peel process which lasts no more than
5 minutes.
Following the Procedure
After the
light "lunch" peel, it is common to experience some
temporary flaking or scaling, redness and dryness; however, this
will disappear as the skin adjusts to the treatment. The patient
can return to work and apply makeup immediately.
After the medium-deep and deep peels, the patient may be prescribed
a mild pain medication to relieve any tingling or throbbing. A
crust or scab will form on the treated area. There may also be
some swelling depending on the strength of the peel used. The
patient will need someone to help care for them for a few days.
They may also be limited to a liquid diet and be advised not to
talk much for a few days.
Avoidance of unprotected or excessive sun exposure is recommended
after skin peels.
With the medium-deep peel the patient can return to work and normal
activities within a week to 10 days. It is best to avoid sun exposure
unless adequately protected.
With a deep peel, new skin will begin to form in about 7-10 days.
After two weeks, the patient may return to work and resume some
normal activities. It is especially important to protect the skin
from the sun.
