Before
Surgery
Prior to surgery,
a complete medical history is taken in order to evaluate the general
health of the patient. Photos will be taken during an evaluation.
Dr Galoob will discuss the procedure and address any concerns.
It is important to have a clear idea of the patient's hopes for
the procedure. Preoperative instructions may include the elimination
of certain drugs, which contain aspirin in order to minimize the
possibility of excess bleeding.
The Procedure
Otoplastic
ear surgery is usually performed on an outpatient basis in Dr.
Galoob's AAAHC accredited Surgical facility (www.aaahc.com ) using
local anesthesia with or without IV sedation. There are two principal
objectives for this surgery. First, the ears are re-positioned
closer to the head ("pinned back"); second the cartilage
is sculpted to create the folds and contours that may not have
developed adequately. The incisions are behind the ear where they
are not visible.
Following
Surgery
A bandage
is worn for several days following surgery. This protects the
ears and allows them to heal in their new flatter position. The
stitches will dissolve in four to six weeks. Usually there is
some bruising and swelling which will go away in about a week.
Most adults
can return to work in about five days, and children can go back
to school (without participating in strenuous activity) after
about one week. The patient will need to wear a cotton headband
for about a month to help prevent injury before proper healing.
